ClassiPress 3.1 (Release Candidate 1)

The time to release ClassiPress 3.1 is here. After much coding and testing, we are publishing release candidate one and making it available to all customers. While we have completed extensive internal testing and had the help of many experienced ClassiPress users in the beta testing period, releasing the product to a wider audience is the ultimate criterion.

We are making sure that we are prepared to immediately tackle any problems that may come up in the next few days. Yumiko and her team are prepped to handle any extra activity in the forums and the developers are ready to attack any bugs.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

We will be taking the next few days to resolve any possible bugs or other problems that get reported. Expect a bug fix update, if necessary, within 10-12 days. We are also planning to release a minor update (3.1.1) in approximately 4-5 weeks.

So What’s New?

  • Facebook sign-in & account creation module
  • Custom ads admin write panel to better manage your customers ads
  • Completely customizable category advanced search with a built-in location radius filter
  • Custom membership pricing packages
  • Upgraded Google maps with geo-mapping for precision accuracy

So What Do I Do Next?

  • Log into your customer account, download and install a copy of ClassiPress 3.1 RC1
  • Read our tutorials on membership packs, activating advanced search and activating Facebook login
  • Take some time to test thoroughly to see if you notice any problems with your install
  • If you do encounter any issues, please go to the customer support forums to report the problem
    • Please search the forums first to see if anyone else has already started a thread regarding that issue
    • If no thread has been started, please begin a new one

Thanks

We would like to thank the beta testers again for helping us solidify this initial release of CP 3.1. Your assistance has been invaluable. We would also like to thank everyone for their patience in waiting for this release. With the incredible new personnel we have on staff and the great customers that support us, we believe that this release is just the beginning of promising new phase for ClassiPress.

    • David

@Steve, once you login to your customer dashboard, you’ll be able to download 3.1 (release candidate 1).

  • Dave

I’m a bit disappointed that there will be no update to the overall design.

I appreciate Your concern about the lack of a design update. Adding features and improving the overall functionality of ClassiPress was our primary goal for this release and we believe that we have achieved that goal.

Moving forward, updating the design of our products and even creating a solution that provides more customer options for look and feel are going to be high priorities.

Is there a list of files that have changed? I have a child theme, with lots of modded files, so I will need to know which ones will need to be re-created for the update.

    • David

@fraservalley, we typically release a patch (only the modified files) but we aren’t going to for 3.1 because almost every file has been modified. It’s better to install a fresh copy of 3.1 and then bring over your changes.

I know it’s too late in your case but we don’t recommend ever modifying the core theme files (just like you wouldn’t modify WordPress core) to prevent hassles when upgrading. Child themes and hooks are designed for that purpose.

        fraservalley

So I will assume the best solution for someone who has lots of mods is to wait for the full release of 3.1, so changes are only made once.

        • David

@fraservalley, yes and at that point you should use the hooks instead of modifying the theme files so future updates will be much less painful. We are working on some tutorials to better explain how the AppThemes API hooks work so you’ll have some guidance.

      • Matt

Hey David – I’ve made some mods to my files such as integrating captcha into the contact sidebar and other things….can we get a list of new changes (not which files have changed) so that we can know what new features have been integrated?

        Thanks!

        • David

@Matt, yes all that will be available once the final stable version of 3.1 has been released.

        • David

@Matt, pretty much every file changed so it’s best to just start with a fresh 3.1 install and then use a child theme or the new AppThemes API hooks instead of modifying the core theme code.

Awesome guys! I will probably wait until it hits stable, but what’s a few more days? 3.1 is here! =)

  • Barbara

What about radius search – is it included? There is no mention of it above. I’ve been waiting for this functionality since it was promised last fall. Is it there???

Great job guys, been testing it and all coming together well:) Can I be nosy here and ask what plugin you use for the facebook comment box on this particular blog – been looking to do this on my own classipress blog but plugins I try seem not to work well. Thanks

    • David

@jamesweb, thanks. Actually we aren’t using any plugin for the Facebook comments. It’s a custom feature we built using the Facebook Open Graph API. You can read more about it here.

did some random checking…3.1 with WP 3.2-RC3. so far looking good. hope to see a bug free stable 3.1 going forward. keep up the good work.

  • Josh

My hosting provider does not have support for PHP5 on my server yet, will classipress 3.1 still work, i believe the PHP version i’m on is 4.4.5. Thanks looking forward to purchasing the new release

    • David

@Josh, our themes support the same minimum requirements as WordPress does.

      Josh,

The problem you may have over time is that if you ever update your WordPress installation to the latest 3.2 install it will be disabled –not work–if you stay at the same webhost.

Your webhost is way behind if they have not installed at least PHP 5 and its . flavors above that.
Some web hosts have PHP 4 and PHP 5 installed and you have to make changes to your php.ini file, or to your .htaccess file, depending on the web host set up.

If you are going to keep going and rely on the improved security that upgraded WordPresss updates provide, as well as some of the functions that are now written to WordPress then you must research getting another webhost. Pure and simple.

I think this version of ClassiPress was designed with WordPress 3.1 in mind.

But, the next major upgrade for WordPress is going to leave you in the dust on that web host you describe.

I suspect then that your mysql hosting MAY be using mySql 4 instead of mysql 5.

That is going to be another problem confronting you soon as more functions are being written to take advantage of mySql 5.

  • Preshel

Will it be possible for me to change the width of the right column, it seems a bit too wide? leaving less room for advertised content.

    • David

@Preshel, yes you can. You’ll want to post your question in the forums where our support team can assist you.

  • kowalski

Using ClassiPress 3.1 Can I add an ad without registration, without account.?

    • David

@kowalski, if you’re the admin, yes you can otherwise ClassiPress piggybacks on the WordPress user registration system so your visitors will need to create an account. It only takes them a few seconds to do.

  • mark

Where is a demo of 3.1?

  • David

@hemedia, sounds like you’ll need to speak with our support team. Please post your issue in the forums and someone will be able to help you.

What is the proper way to update to 3.1, if I have the previous one already operating?. Will I loose all my current ads that I have currently posted?

    • David

@gemini11, no you won’t lose any of your ads or settings when you upgrade. Just upload the RC1 into WordPress and activate it. If you have any problems, please post your questions in the forum where our support team can assist you.

  • Bodo

    Hi David,
my English is not so good, my German better;-), but I hope you understand my question anyway:
Can I use it as a precursor for ClassiPress Vantage? If Vantage is later completed, you can then take the data from ClassiPress in Vantage?

    Thank you Bodo

    • David

@Bodo, no ClassiPress and Vantage are two different themes so they will not be compatible. They serve different markets (classified vs business directory).

  • Marcin

The “Refine Search” works quite well, but would it be possible to join it with “Standard Search”? If you search using main one, you can’t refine your results and in the refine one you can’t put any keywords. Joining them would be perfect.

    • David

@Marcin, glad you’re enjoying the new refine search feature. Yes, we have talked about joining the two but it didn’t make the 3.1 cut. I’m sure it’s something we’ll do in the next major release.

I was wondering given the emminent release of a stable version of the theme if I ought just to wait a few more days to install it rather than having to deal with patch, etc later on? Especially, since I am new to Classipress!

Hello. When is the X day, the X hour, when we see 3.1?

  • Rick

Will 3.1 have a user rating system to help eliminate scammers and build confidence in the site? If not, are there plans to implement a user rating system in the future?

    Thank you.

    • David

@Rick, not in 3.1. You can submit your idea on our Ideas Exchange, however.

      • Rick

        Thank you.

It would appear that opportunistic scam artists have taken a liking to the anonymity that classipress offers. It is extremely unfortunate but the repeated deals gone bad have really tainted the experience in an otherwise excellent platform. Having some form of rating system wouldn’t eliminate bad deals, but it would go a long way to instilling a sense of legitimacy among users.

        Thank you.

  • Fabo

When are you going to update the live demo?
